Building Magic

When architecture student and summertime welder Tina Moreland develops a reputation as a peeping Tom, it isn’t the first time she’s been teased for being different. Catching a glimpse of the man of her dreams is worth the aggravation. But when she witnesses him doing something stranger than stripping in his hightower office, it’s enough to make her forget that when working unharnessed on the fifth floor, the first step is a long way down.

Working in the human world leaves Devin Ken’Draga frustrated and exhausted. Things aren’t going well. Devin is the Kenta – prime dragon - in a world not far from earth, only a magical breath of flame away. It is a world that is having problems, and he is expected to solve them. The question is how. Civil war has shattered his land and destroyed his home. He can’t come up with an Answer, and the Elders can only tell him he will find what he needs on Earth.

Devin doesn’t have time to rescue a damsel in distress. But since she is literally falling at his feet, he can’t help but to save Tina. Bringing her home wasn’t part of the plan, but once they fall through the magical portal together, there is no going back. It is only when he spreads his wings in his true dragon form that Devin realizes something he hadn’t anticipated – the woman is a virgin, a temptation no dragon can resist.

Together Devin and Tina create a sensual bond, gladly sacrificing her virginity to protect her from the dragon males who might think that hurting her would be a good way to hurt Devin. Her virginity is a gift – with it’s loss comes a release of power that Devin collects into a gemstone. It isn’t enough to stop the war, and Devin is worried. There is no way for him or Tina to ever return to Earth – the magic that rules the land only allows that trip once. He’s lost his chance to bring back a way to find peace for his people. The entire Southern Dragon race is at risk, so many have dies from the war. He turns to Tina for distraction and comfort.

Tina knows Devin is worried and does what she can to soothe him.  But she is all that he brought back from Earth – what more can she do to save his people? The questions haunt her. When inspiration strikes, she develops a plan to save them, not realizing how it will hurt Devin. Devin will do anything to save his people, but he must deal with his inner demons, along with those who oppose him physically. Together they must find a way to stand together.

When the time comes, Tina proves her worth to Devin and all the dragons. Devin fights to protect her and his people, and using the magic from their first lovemaking he gifts her with it, mating with her for life and giving his people hope along with a new queen.

To My Readers:

I am thrilled to bring you a taste of the dragon world of Sa’Harin! My heroine, Tina, found it to be an eye-opener, and that’s quite a compliment from a reputed Peeping Tom. Devin gives her a lot to look at – between his delicious masculinity and his jaw-dropping beauty as a powerful dragon. Enjoy!

Meankitty Wants to Know: Lilly Cain

Author Lilly Cain, whose website is at http://www.lillycain.com/, has got some deficiencies as a publishing professional. You'll find out why as she reveals the shocking truth about the subject matter in her fiction in her answers below and its decided paucity of paws. (Feline paws--dogs don't count.) But on the bright side, she appears to be an exceptional human, serving her cat Mittens, whose interview will be posted Wednesday, March 17, in an acceptable fashion.

***

1) Why did you decide to be a writer instead of a cat sanctuary owner?

I can really only take care of one kitty. She's a lot of work and I have to maintain my day job and my writing just to keep her in treats!

2) Why do you think cats are better than dogs? (Since you call yourself a writer, I trust your answer will be eloquent.)

Cats are better because ...hmm, let me think...oh yes, because they don't drool. And of course because they are mystical, mysterious and flat out beautiful. They been worshipped as gods (and apparently still think they are to be revered) and still maintain the ability to be fluffy and cute.

3) Tell me about the felines in your fiction. How often do they appear and how big a part do they play in your narratives?

I've never written about cats. However I think that is about to change. I've been getting these amazing dreams and I keep looking up from my manuscript to find my cat staring at me. It's almost hypnotic...I think the next series I will write will feature a cat - a telepathic cat.

4) On the off-chance you have yet to incorporate cats into your fiction, when do you plan to rectify this egregious error and demonstration of poor writing skills?

Unfortunately I'll have to finish my 3 current series before I can start anything new. My first series, Dark Seduction, is a trilogy of dark, erotic novels for Red Sage Publishing that revolves around the members of a vampire pack as they break away from an evil leader and go their own ways. Book one, Dark Harmony, was released in January 2010, and I am currently writing book two. My second series is also with Red Sage - a set of erotic novellas set in the land of Sa'harin, the desert land of shape shifting dragons. The first book will be out in a few months, and I am plotting book two. Finally, I have an erotic sci-fi series of four novellas that has just found a home but I can't get into details until the contracts are finalized. Two of those books are now completed. So, my amazing new kitty based series is going to have to wait awhile, despite this urge I have to write them.

5) What are your favorite works of fiction involving cats or favorite fictional cats?

I'm particularly fond of the cat in Alice in Wonderland - with that lingering smile - but I have a friend, Cathryn Fox that has written a book called INSTINCTIVE that has one really HOT shape shifting feline. I highly recommend it!

6) Do you have any amazing, or at least humorous, real life cat stories you'd like to share?

We had a real scare when Mittens was a tiny kitty. We came home, not long after we got her and couldn't find the little baby anywhere! We turned the house upside down, looked for her everywhere and even took apart the air vents. We finally found her asleep in the shelves with the freshly folded towels. Looking at the trashed house and the tiny sleeping kitty I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

7) Multiple choice 1. What is your preference and why?
A) Long hair
B) Short hair
C) No hair
-- Note: I am not, of course, referring to the hirsute qualities of your most recent hero or heroine.

Our evil baby kitty is long haired, but to be honest I prefer short hair. Who knew when I got that tiny kitten that she would turn out to have more hair than cat?

8) Multiple choice 2. You have a writing deadline but the cat who rules you wants some attention. Desperately. Do you:

A) Lock the cat in another room and keep working?
B) Pet the cat for a couple minutes and then toss her cruelly aside?
C) Pet the cat as long as she wants because you know it will inspire and refresh you? -- Note: If you answered anything besides C, we suggest you consider the fact you could have written a much better book if you had been inspired and refreshed instead of mean to the cat.

This is a tough one. I don't lock Mittens up until she inexplicably tries to bite my hair or my arms (I have learned to not let her sit with me on the arms of the chair for too long if I am typing.). But, deadlines are serious business, and I have a lot of them - first draft, revisions and edits. So when Mittens needs attention I am lucky to have my children here to help out! They love to play ball with her, or pet her.

User submitted:

How goes the discussion about discipline in your house?

Oh fine, I think she has me well trained. ;) She does seem to have an issue with the kids though. Someone takes it too far and bites once in a while - and I don't mean my daughters.

What one thing would you change about your pet/human?

I'd make my kitty able to proof-read!! A copy editor in the house would be an incredible thing!

Do you think pets and humans come to resemble each other over time?

Nah, she's beautiful and has big eyes and soft hair...hmmm. Maybe we do look alike! Yeah, sure! LOL

Can you type with a cat stretched out across your wrists? If not, why not? Otherwise, how's the carpal tunnel?

The can and typing are not a great mix. However, she is a wonderful plotter. We brainstorm once in a while. :)

When you're in the zone with your writing, what does your cat have to do to get your attention?

Well, she doesn't meow, so the sneak attack appears to be her choice of approach. I am not fond of this and am considering getting her a collar with a bell.

****

Sincerely,

Meankitty & Typing Slave

SMITHJULIABLOG.jpg 13 Reasons to Read Dark Harmony by Lilly Cain

Dark Harmony is the debut novel from Lilly Cain, one of the amazing women from my writers' group, Romance Writers of Atlantic Canada.

She's been to the writers' retreats I so adore, and at the latest one this past fall we all celebrated along with her when she received confirmation of Dark Harmony's release date.

1 - Dark Harmony is part of Red Sage's Action & Adventure/Contemporary/Vampire categories, and is an erotica eBook romance.

2 - We meet Helena Townsend, who loves to feel the pulsing energy of the club crowd as she dances to live music. One night she's uncharacteristically drawn to a gorgeous man who parts the dance floor like a mist to draw her to him. Twenty years later, Lena has escaped the cruel dominance of that man from the club - no man, but a vampire pack leader who made her life both a living hell and a confusing passionate release.

3 - Richard Heron is a music journalist covering trends for Rolling Stone, still not recovered from the violent death of his sexually-submissive wife at the hands of an unknown dom. Richard is entranced by Lena, a beautiful woman he meets in an Irish bar, her face glowing with the energy and vibe of the band and the crowd, as though she's fed somehow by live musical performance.

4 - Before his wife died, Richard had supplemented his journalism by opening a club where sexual fantasies could be revealed and pursued. His own dominant tendencies initially scare off a once-bitten-twice-shy Lena. The same instincts which led him to open his club in the first place serve him well when he rises to the challenge of re-introducing Lena to the authentic lover inside her.

5 - I found this story's BDSM subplot very touching. What is dominance and submission if not the symbolic surrender to a lover? The very fact that Lena has vampiric strength that could break any bedroom bondage puts her scenes with Richard into a different realm, which Lilly writes with accomplished emotional depth.

6 - Lilly Cain handles the reactions of the human characters to the shock of vampires entering their world with wry realism. Her scenes take us from the contemporary world into the paranormal with the jolt one would expect from such a revelation, and she doesn't shy away from the horror aspects of traditional vampire stories. These characters aren't simply bad boy characters - they are chilling killers. As a lover of traditional vampire stories, I'm very grateful for that.

7 - I really enjoyed the black humor peppered throughout the story. This part made me laugh out loud in the midst of a high-tension vampire attack scene:

Glimpses of the men and women surrounding her flashed in the available light. Gleaming eyes, soft lips, long hair, they were beautiful, and they laughed at her. What the hell was wrong with her? She was being molested by a group of psychotic fashion models, and she should be screaming.

When Richard realizes he's been bitten twice by his vampire lover, he says 'So why are you following me? And does being marked mean that you have some sort of power over me? Will I start eating bugs?' He smiled weakly, but the questions were serious.

8 - Lena has made an interesting decision by the time we meet up with her again, twenty years after her turning. She rejects the truths her maker Darien told her about what it takes to live as a vampire. I enjoyed this original concept toward alternatives to the taking of human life.

9 - In order to survive against the vampire pack she left behind, Lena has become an adept martial arts fighter. As a huge fan of the Kill Bill films, I also relished this aspect of Dark Harmony, which leads to some exciting fight sequences.

10 - Lilly really knows how to end each chapter with a hook. Like this, for example:

"Her eyes flicked to the other man, one she really, really didn’t want to recognize. Her fear grew, oh, so much worse. He snarled in anger. Darien. He had yet to move in her direction, but the threat he exuded could not be ignored. He could be her death. Sweat drenched her in a quick flood. The noise in the bar faded, and people near her backed away as her terror brushed against them.

Time to run. The sounds of the bar flooded back into her senses. She grabbed her satchel and left the table. Her body swayed in tempo with those around her as she passed through the crowd. Some wouldn’t step aside for her and she shoved them, hard, and headed for the back.

'Helena.'

She heard him call, her ex-lover, her ex-master, his voice harsh with anger and, perhaps, longing. Both emotions had her heart pounding.
There, a fire door. Forcing it open, she ignored the shrill burst from the fire alarm and fled the area as quickly as possible.

Not quick enough. As she entered the alley, she caught the sickly scent of cooling blood."

11 - As someone who also writes about vampires, I really enjoyed Lilly's scenes involving practical problems such as dealing with the oncoming sunrise. Very nice world-building here.

12 - The three-pronged sai, Lena's weapon of choice, is a good symbol for the flavors of this story. The vampire aspect is the central blade, with action/adventure and dominance/submission running alongside like the two outside blades.

13 - I leave you with an excerpt. Enjoy!

"He walked to the mirror hanging over the dressing table. Those few steps made him dizzy again. He clutched the panties in his fist. Great sex was one thing, but this weakness, that was another. He looked pale in the mirror, and tired. A soft green bruise bloomed on his inner thigh, and on his wrist a darker mark had formed. He looked at his arm and shuddered. There were two tiny scabs in the middle of the bruise.

'Lena?' he called again.

She had to be in the bathroom. Was she embarrassed by their impulsive night? Or feeling like him, sick as a dog?

He pounded against the bathroom door. 'Lena, are you okay?'

The door was locked.

Despite his screaming skull, he knocked louder.

'Lena! Are you all right? Let me in.'

What if she isn’t okay? He dropped her underwear and threw his weight against the door.

***

Lena's dream changed. She bared her fangs and hissed a feral warning. The demon threw agonizing beams of light at her. Her eyes streamed as the light pierced them, and she threw up her arm to protect herself.

Then it was gone. All was quiet. She lapsed back into complete unconsciousness. The dark had returned so her slumber deepened. A part of her sighed for the lost dream.

***

'Holy shit!' Richard panted as he slammed the door between him and the creature in the bathroom.

'Jesus Christ!' He scrambled backward and stared at the door, expecting at any moment to be faced with the spitting cat-creature he’d awoken in the tub. It couldn’t be Lena. It couldn’t.
What the fuck was that?

The lights had been off. He’d seen a figure wrapped in blankets lying in the tub. Odd, but perhaps she was shy about sleeping in front of a man who, although they had shared the most intimate of moments, barely knew her.

He’d called her name and flicked on the lights. He’d reached in to shake her shoulder. And then—

Richard shuddered and wiped at the sweat beading on his forehead. The bathroom door remained closed. Everything was quiet. Still, he couldn’t move.

As the bathroom light had flickered on, she changed. It had been Lena, he was sure now. But with the light her face grew furious, and she snarled and hissed at him. And her mouth, her mouth stretched wide to bare those gleaming white fangs, so long—

He checked his wrist. The bruise seemed lighter but the marks were still there.
Jesus, she bit me!"

Once upon a time she was called Helena Townsend, an American visiting London and she was booked to fly home the next day.  But Helena met a man named Darien in a pub and foolishly accompanied him back to his hotel room.  That night passion and pain merged as Darien created his female alpha mate for the pack.

Ten years later Richard Heron is in a pub in Ireland recording folk music for his Rolling Stones article when he spies the breathtaking ‘Lena’ in the crowd.  She follows him to his hotel room for a night of unbridled passion and mistakenly ‘marks’ Richard as hers.

Lena is unaware that Richard lost his wife several years ago to someone who ripped out her throat and drained her blood.  The killer was never found and the police were clueless as to how she died.

Richard flees from Lena as soon as he can, back to his home and daughter, hoping to forget the unforgettable night.  Lena must follow Richard to protect him from Darien.  What happens next is anybody’s guess with a runaway vampire, a strong willed human, and a possessive master vampire.  Bystanders beware.

Wickedly sensuous and boldly suspenseful, get ready to enjoy the dark tale of Dark Harmony.  There is a wonderful balance between the characters here, from chilling menace to sweet tenderness and strength which helps to enrich Dark Harmony.  Fast pacing keeps the plotline flowing in this deeply emotional and edgy story.  Dark Harmony mixes mild BDSM, eroticism, and tormented characters into a heart pounding drama with satisfying results.

Lena’s life has been stolen from her. Darien turned her into the alpha female of his vampire pack expecting her to be his sexual submissive yet dominant to the pack. However, she was never able to reconcile the two roles. She also didn't want to take lives when she fed, so she simply couldn’t stay with the pack. Unfortunately for her, the pack is not willing to let her go. She is trying to build a new life for herself, one in which she feeds on both blood and human emotions and never takes a life. While on the run she meets Richard, the kind man who lost his wife to vampires and who is suppressing his deeply sensual nature in order to care for his daughter.  Could they help each other find salvation?

Lena is a perfect heroine – an incredibly strong woman with just enough frailty to make her relatable. Her reasons for wanting to leave the pack are good ones that most people can understand. Richard is the sweet human that Lena is drawn to, but whom she seems to think is too good for her. Compared to the nightmare that is Darien, he is like a little bit of heaven come to save her.  They are both tortured souls - Lena for what she's had to do, him for the violent loss of his wife. Their coming together is not just a romance, but also a healing of souls. They are a good match emotionally and physically. They have been suppressing their sexual needs, but together they are finally able to free their urges for dominance and submission. Richard, having been the former owner and top Dom at an S&M club, is the perfect person to help Lena give in to her fantasies. The sex is just as hot as you can image it would be between a vampire and a Dom.
Get your fans ready, because you are going to need them!  Dark Harmony is an excellent beginning to a fascinating new vampire series that needs to be on your bookshelf. Don’t miss out on this gem!

Helena Townsend is an obsession for Darien, a Master vampire. He turned her and made her the alpha female of his pack where she constantly had to fight to defend her position as the lead female. Darien however took great joys to humiliate and dominate her sexually for the ultimate submissive in front of the pack.

As Helena matures she finds herself hating the role she was molded to and she realizes that she doesn’t have to kill in order to feed and ultimately she runs from the pack. She becomes Lena, she is surviving on her own and is learning to develop her psychic abilities to read and encourage emotions thereby feeding on the emotions and controlling the bloodlust. But the pack wants her back and will go to any means to get her.

Richard Heron, a former owner (and dom) of a S&M club has left that life behind after the brutal murder of his wife during a session with a client. Now he is a devoted dad who misses the life.

Richard finds Lena while traveling over seas and they have great, mind blowing sex. Then he discovers she is a vampire and he runs for the airport and home. Now Lena fears what Darien will do to Richard and his family so she follows him back to the States. The attraction is great and Lena finds herself bonding to Richard and making him and his family part of her pack. Lena and Richard first must end the hunt by Darien and his pack before they can find happiness with each other and safety for the family. Lena learns to trust her submissive side while still being in control and Richard learns to enjoy his dominates nature without being controlling.

This book was listed as “spicy” and boy was it! It definitely raised the pulse a few notches! I thoroughly enjoyed Lilly Cain’s writing and flow of the book (after I got over blushing of course). The writing was direct, easy to read and the plot easy to follow... I will definitely add Lily Cain to my list of authors to look for and read.

Here's the blurb from the publisher, Red Sage:
Running from a lover that has twisted her very nature, Lena Townsend hunts on her own.

Lena has been the object of many desires. Now she is all too aware that being an obsession can be deadly. Her mildly adventurous sexual life reached its pinnacle, and its end, when she met sexually dominant vampire Darien. He stole her life, and used her sensual nature to bend her to his will. In making her his own, he placed her in a position where she must constantly submit to him, yet be dominant to his pack. It’s a conflict that pulls her apart.

In leaving the pack, Lena strives for independence, but her vampire instincts push her to find more – to find a new pack, a new family. Alone, she cannot share what makes her vampire, and she cannot find a lover she can trust enough to reveal her submissive nature.

In her escape Lena discovers a power that could save her – the ability to read and influence emotion. With this talent she might survive the loneliness.

Unfortunately, her old pack wants her back, no matter what.

Richard Heron has given up everything for his daughter since the murder of his wife, but what he misses most is the chance to explore his deeply sensual side once again. Once the owner of a popular S&M club, and its favored dom, he left everything he was to shelter his family. Lena could offer him more than he ever expected, a level of sensuality he never knew existed and a love that could never die, but he must reconcile the danger she brings with his need to shield his family – especially when what killed his wife was certainly not human.

In a flight that leads her thousands of miles from her territory and into the province of a dragon, independence is not what Lena expected. But if she can finally learn to trust, she can find harmony with her submissive and vampiric natures, and join with Richard into a new blend of family – a Dark Harmony.

When Red Sage sent me a copy of this ebook, I was curious about it. But had several other reviews that needed to be done first, so it got pushed to the wayside. But as I was home sick today, I pulled out my new nook and started to read. I was drawn in to the story from the start as Lena is a young woman, alone in the world and overwhelmed by a stranger. Soon we jump ahead a couple decades and we meet the vampire that Lena has transformed in to. She's killed in the past, but realizes that she doesn't have to live that way and breaks from her master and pack. She's again alone in the world, and she meets Richard while at a bar and is immediately drawn to him. And then the story really takes off.

I haven't read many books with a vampire heroine and a human hero. All too often, if the woman is vampire, then the man is as well. This was an interesting, and refreshing, twist. Lena is a woman who can take care of herself, but is tired of being along. But she doesn't want another pack, she longs more for a family. Then she meets Richard, a man who challenges her and can provide that family she's longing for. It makes quite the intriguing plot. Of course, what vampire story can be complete without some sort of villain. Enter Darien, Lena's former master, a ruthless vampire who wants her back in his pack or dead. And he's willing to follow her across oceans to find her.

At times the story was a little more violent than I like. And a few of the sex scenes pushed some boundaries as the author explored the S&M, dom/sub world. But I found myself riveted to the story and couldn't put the book down until I was finished. If you're looking for a vampire story with a bite and a bit of a twist, then this one is for you.

Dark Harmony is a dark, gritty, and emotional story that lures the reader in and doesn’t let go. From the first scene in which our heroine, Helena, is changed, you get a feel of the dangerous world created by author Lily Cain. It’s sexy, it’s lethal, and it’s impossible to turn away from.

Helena left her vampire pack due to the treatment of their alpha and her maker, Darien. Being the leader of a pack, yet, reduced to the role of a slave, was simply too much to bear. On the run now, she is determined to live a life that doesn’t involve killing. One night, she meets a human who calls to her in ways she’s never experienced. A quick encounter with Richard becomes more when their paths cross for a second time – over the body of a dead girl in an alley. Their chemistry is combustive, and after a night of passion, Richard awakes to discover exactly what the woman of his dreams is – a vampire – the very creature responsible for murdering his wife a year before. Even still, he cannot forget the sexy Lena, and despite the danger, allows himself to become involved when she follows him to his home.

What happens next is a domino effect. Darien doesn’t want to let Helena go, while she would rather die than return to a murdering and subservient way of life. Danger looms around every corner, and when Darien learns that she is falling for Richard, he homes in on the one thing that means the most to the mortal man – his young daughter.

Dark Harmony has various subplots which are twined together nicely. I enjoyed the action, the romance, and the dark tones of the story. Lena is fantastic as a woman who became something else, yet, longs for something more, while Richard is memorable as a father who wants to protect his daughter and the woman he is falling in love with.

Vampire fans are certain to enjoy Dark Harmony Be sure to pencil this one down on the TBR list. It’s hot, it’s sexy, and it’s sure to entertain.
